Rapunzel, Let Down Your Hair

Do you remember the dress I made for Little Miss H(4) for her birthday? Well you can check it out here. In that post I mentioned the rapunzel hair, well I finally found some yellow wool.

I checked out the post I had saved for this on the Weekend Homemaker. Found here. And decided to do it a bit differently. It's not as long, and doesn't use pantihose but I found it super easy to make.

After first cellotaping one long end, I wrapped it round the length of the coffee table again and again and again until I had only a short amount left.

I used the length I had cellotaped to the table to wrap the wool and tie off the top section. Then slipped it off the table.

Now by hanging it from the tied off section I could measure the approximate head area, I tied another piece around what is the neck part of the wig. Then plaited the rest, remembering to trim off the ends for a tidy finish.

The finished length came to her knees and she loved it so much she wore it to bed that night. One sucessful project, now to make another one for the dress up box.

School Holidays are over

For me anyway. No more kids for me this week. They are a handful and quite frankly exhaust me, but when they leave I miss them. They just seem to fill the house with life, laughter and of course fighting. I remember fighting with my brother when I was a kid, sometimes with real intent to wound but it's different looking at it from the otherside. I tend to let them work things out themselves most of the time, but yesterday I had to turn the xbox off midgame and separate them before it came to serious blows. Keeping them busy and being organised seems to be the key, so with this in mind I prepared a project for yesterday, they of course got bored with the time it was taking but more than happy to share credit when their Dad showed up.

I would have posted these last night but my camera batteries needed recharging.

I started with a dozen toilet rolls.

Cut into two cm slices, I painted the insides (notice I said I not we).

I tried a few different patterns and we (back to we again) decided on the following. And proceeded to glue them together with a mix of glue and red paint, so that any paint showing blended in.

For what I want it needs to be bigger, but this is a great start and gives a good idea of what the finished look will be. The boys thought it was awesome considering it started out as toilet rolls and yes they looked at me like I was crazy when I asked them to paint them. Now I just need to start saving up more toilet rolls. With just two of us in the house, this could take a while so don't hold your breath waiting for pictures of the finished product on our bedroom wall.
Hat's off to Parents of School Age Children

We are into our second week of school holidays here in New Zealand. It's not something that I have had to struggle through before, I usually had the school holidays as a holiday myself. But these holidays I have been looking after a friend's children, Master I (12) and Master E (9) and man are they exhausting me. Today is their last day with me as they are spending the rest of the week with their Grandmother. So, today I am putting them to work for me on a project for the bedroom, I'll update later with the results.
And to all the parents out there -
Friday's Finds

Now todays find was from a clean out at my Mother's house, I have no idea how long they had been up in the cupboard, but they were at the back of the top lounge cupboard, the room that used to be Annie's room. So probably for quite awhile.

It started out as this rough looking parcel

But upon closer inspection or Once I got the string undone, I found these.

And there are heaps more pages, I might try to learn some of the less complicated writing for my wedding invites, placecards etc.
Budget Boutique

Today was my day at the shop. I love going in and searching through the box's and get almost giddy when someone comes in and asks if we take donations. I love that you just never know what is going to come out of that next bag or box. My Mum loves to chat to the customers and do the sales, I tend to either hide out the back hanging things or looking through the shop. I swear most people think I'm just another customer the amount of time I spend looking at the racks.

And every now and again you find something like this!!

AWOL

I've been struggling to post since I finished the Made by Me May, I think it's a little to do with winter and my yearly hybernation and a lot to do with my lack of motivation at the moment. I've still been doing some crafting but not alot. I have been feeling a bit overwhelmed by this whole idea of exposing myself to the world at large, and how I may react to any criticism, especially now people are starting to read my blog.

I have been impressed by the fantastic example a close friend of mine is exibiting in her own recently started blog about her struggle with depression and raising her daughter. I have my own struggle with Depression, which I have not mentioned up until now. I have lived with this my whole life and kept it to myself most of the time up until recently, I love my friends and family but have a hard time communicating and staying attached to them as I feel I am constantly disappointing them and so tend to distance myself. Knowing that I am not alone in this is helping me so much. I've also been spending some time with the kids in my life, they always
bring me back down to earth while lifting my spirits at the same time. I am going to live by her example and remain true to who I am and be open and honest in all my posts. I am who I am and I don't think that's such a bad thing.

Now the good news is that I'm back and I have some great projects in mind. Keep posted for tomorrow's Friday's Findings plus a new refashion.

I found seven of these jars at the Salvation Army. The two in the back are plain white and cream, but the five in front are great, I love the labels. I haven't seen these before and with all 7 for $5 I wasn't going to risk them going to someone else while I thought about it. I think I'm going to use them as decorations in our wedding, that at this stage is going to be in December.
Made By Me May - Day 31

It's the last day of Made by Me May, I'm quite impressed I managed to last, with a few small hiccups, but still I made it. I have shown you almost everything I have photographed of my mades but barely tackled me. Luckily it doesn't have to end here, I look forward to many more posts and themed months. I thought I would finish the month with a photo of me, thus far I haven't felt brave enough, I don't particularly like having my photo taken and putting it up for the world to see is a bit scary, but if I want you to know who I am, you need a picture to put with the words.

I'm wearing an old hat of my Gran's that hangs on the lounge wall of our house next to the Mr's Granfather's old hat.

Check out this cute ladies top, I liked the material and thought a small change would turn it into a little girls dress.

The straps were shortened and I cut off some of the length, then I made a cute ruffle for along the bottom and all done. Quick and easy.

Now check this out, quite possibly the ugliest, most astounding thing I have found, but the material interested me, and it was free, my favourite price. Keep an eye out for the transformation coming soon.
Made by Me May - Day 30

I just noticed all my posts were scheduled to be posted next month, so I have changed that now and hopefully gotten it right this time.

I'm not the most computer savvy person in the world, I took typing all the way through high school but in the last year computer studies became compulsory. I lost six months work and even the teacher couldn't figure what I had done. I didn't touch a Computer again for years until a flatmate bought one and he showed me how much easier they had gotten. Initially I got quite addicted to chatting and had friends all over the world. When I say 'quite addicted' I mean full on kick me off the computer and I will stab you crazy. I had to go cold turkey and didn't touch a computer for a few years. I'm definitely not addicted now, I'm not going to start cyber stalking you or anything. But I may ask you to be my friend on Frontierville.

Now, the Mr. has insisted that I add this, as it is his favourite of my sewing projects.

It's not really a refashion or recycle as it is made from felt, but I did buy that felt at a second hand shop. It was made with a lot of love for the Mr's little brother for Christmas (It's his favourite saying). The Mr and I designed it together and I made it. It sat on our television for quite awhile before it made it to it's new owner, and it was proudly show to all that came to the house. By the Mr. not me, you'd think he had sewn it himself.
You got a brief look at my jewellery boxes in yesterday's post, but this one is my favourite. Made for me by my Dad it also has a matching smaller box that I use for rings.
My new reading corner. I bought two of the footstools for $10 on TradeMe with the view to recover, but I actually like the colour. Maybe because it's green.
Bench painted red below the freshly painted windows and new curtains. I'm on the lookout for some more material, possibly in red to lengthen the curtains. I still have a bit of dressing to do, will be playing around with things for the next few weeks until I'm happy with the placement of things.
Made Me May - Day 26

Wow, almost finished the month already.

The one thing that drives me mad is text language. I love the written word and have a huge respect for the English language. So, when I get a text or a message on facebook that looks like a random selection of letters and numbers, it truly breaks my heart. And it's not that I don't understand them or even use a few of them myself when necessary. I like everyone else love a good LOL. I don't know, maybe it's a sign of getting older, complaining about what the younger generation are doing, I will just never be able to accept it. All the young ones out there will just have to accept that I respect correct spelling much like I got used to my gran's insistance in using cursive writing (or joined up writing). She used to make me practice for hours, and along with ironing her hankies and polishing her spoons, is something I will never have fond memories of and was quite happy to drop from my daily life. Not that I want everyone to get the silver polish out again, but maybe somethings shouldn't be kept.

Here is a granny style nightgown I got in a bag of throw aways. It's hard to tell but it is a lovely pale purple colour. The only reason I could see for it being thrown out was the ripped lace across the front.

Made By Me May - Day 27

We spent the night at a friends place last weekend. They have three gorgeous girls Miss H(15) Little Miss H (4) and Miss B (15months). Such a great way to spent the night and day today, they are so amazingly entertaining. I've know Miss H(15) since she was 5 and I love the awesome young woman she has turned into. Her Mum DS was showing us the Wii and the Just Dance game when Miss H came into the lounge and turned it off half way through a dance claiming "Mum, stop that now!, you are embarrasing yourself, You have guests!" I laughed so hard I nearly peed myself. I took the girls some things I had gotten from the shop for them including a little bridesmaid dress in size 12 months I thought Miss B might like to dress up in as Little Miss H has alot of dress up clothes but when I got up the next morning Little Miss H had decided she was going to wear it, and with some persistance she managed it. It skirt only came to her knees but she loved it. I had actually taken her an infinity scarf I had knitted for her, she is always stealing mine whenever I visit.
I had been given this scarf by a friend, and although there is nothing really wrong with it, I decided to unravel it and start over.
I wound it all around a picture frame and was left with a tail, it was the perfect length for a bracelet, so I wore it. No waste, tick.
I've had my draws since I moved out of home, they were my mothers before that. I remember when she bought them, I think I was 8 or 9. So, they are approx 30 years old. Two bedsides and one duchess are all that remains of a large bedroom suite. I hated the look of them and have been wanting to paint them for an extremely long time. For the time being they do not have the new handles they deserve, but hopefully they won't be too far off
A really really large jar I got from the shop one month filled with two strings of christmas lights. I can turn on one string or two depending on how much light I want and can even get them to blink if I want, although I'm not sure why I would want.

Just a quick one today.

My favourite colour is Green, you may have noticed that already as nearly every room in my house has been painted green including the lovely green you can see in the photo below, that is on one of my workroom walls. I think it runs in the family my Gran's favourite colour was green as well.

I used this frame to display one of my favourite items out of my Gran's sewing box.
It still has some of the original needles in it as well.
You may have noticed in the hallway earthquake pics all the books, well that photo was taken 15 months ago, here is the Hallway now.

That's right I'm a reader. I'll read almost anything and find it impossible to walk pass a book display without having a look. I once read 31 books in one month, it must of been a really slow month, I generally get through about 4-10 a month. All the books here are secondhand and mainly unread and these aren't all of them.

Books I haven't even unpacked yet

I generally only keep a book until I have read it, then it makes it's way onto it's new owner either via the charity shop or bookcrossing, I've even given books to random people I've seen reading on the bus. I try to always have a book on me, you never know when you'll get a few minutes or a hour if you're waiting for a doctors appointment.

One of my favourite authors is Catherine Cookson, and I still have a few of hers that I have read before, one of the only authors I have kept, others being Jodi Picoult, John Grisham and Robert Goddard. I made a special bookcase to display my Cookson collection, a set of 5 kitchen drawers I got for $1 on Trademe. The woman selling them wasn't sure that anyone would want them and was fascinated when I told her what I had planned, I send her an email with photos when it was first done.
That photo was lost, and this one is from after the quakes. The top draw fell off and the bottom is a bit off kilter.

I lined the draws with pages from an old book that was falling apart (I couldn't of sacrificed it otherwise, plus I read it first) but other than that the draws didn't need much added to them. I couldn't let the 5th draw go to waste, so now its a cat bed for next to where I sit at the computer, although they don't seem to appreciate the effort.
Made By Me May - Day 22

My mother picked me up from the Airport and she drove me home. It was
midnight Fri 25th Feb and I had no idea what I was coming home to. The
power was still out and once I had coaxed Mr Wobbly out from under the
house all I could do was go to bed. The next morning I was shocked to
see how little our home had been affected, we live on the edge of the
city central, the footage of which I had been watching for days.
After
only 1 hour of tidying up, the house looked like nothing had happened.
Non essential travel was not recommended, I was now stuck in our home.
Looking in our kitchen cupboards I found all our wine glasses had
fallen over but remained intact, for the first time in my life I was
furious, I wanted to smash everything, it all seemed so unfair, instead I
sat down and cried and cried.
Luckily our power was restored that
evening, I don't know how I would have managed on my own in the dark.
The Mr came home a few days after me and we set about seeing how we
could help. But didn't know what we could do, and that's when I went
onto TradeMe and ended up with these guys

Here are five of the six kittens we took in, in early March. Then while our heatpump was being installed, the kittens were overheard and the installer mentioned the earthquake had left him with a new cat who had given birth under his house. The shelters were all full and he didn't know what to do with them. Now guess what I said?

That's right meet the new four. Luckily the others had found homes by the time these guys showed up. Except for Jack that is.

We consider ourselves to be very lucky, everyone we love is safe, our home is ok and where we live life is reatively uninterrupted. I'm proud of the way we came together, everyone reaching out to the neighbours they had probably never met. I love Christchurch even more now than ever and I have no plans of leaving. I'm in this relationship for the long haul.

In the top earthquake photo you can see that we had a huge lack of storage in the kitchen, we used this bookcase until I could get my new shelves built. I bartered for these shelves with a builder friend by babysitting his son's.

As you can see, I painted this wall a deep green, I so love this colour. He built the shelves from odd pieces he had stored in his garage. The original idea was to paint them white, but I liked the rustic feel of them.

I filled the shelves with all the eclectic pieces I had collected. The scales my Gran used to bake with (far right), the mismatched glasses, decorative plates as well as practical items. The basket on the bottom shelf holds our cutlery, we don't have any draws, that's weird right?
Made by Me May - Day 21

I think the whole city was in shock after the September quake but we picked ourselves up and dusted ourselves off and moved on in the best way we could.
In December we moved into the house we are in now and out of my Mum's. For us it was a pretty uneventful few months then in early Feb my Gandfather passed away as well as a close friend. We were in Hamilton for our friends funeral when the February 22nd came around. I was on the plane on my way home, the Mr was staying on in Hamilton to visit with his brother, and 10 minutes from landing we were told that the plane was turning around and going back to Auckland, Christchurch had had another Earthquake and the airport was shut. That's all I knew until we landed. So armed with my meal voucher and no where to go, I sat outside the airport and rang everyone I could think of. My Mum was ok, My Dad was ok (he was still in ChCh after my grandad's funeral) my friends were ok, but I couldn't reach my brother. All around me people were talking "the Cathedal has collapsed" "there are dead people in the streets" "no flights for the rest of the day" I wished I had been there, I could do nothing to help from here, I was trapped in Auckland. I went inside the airport to the bar and joined the crowds around the TV as they showed the latest footage. I've never seen a bar so quiet before, apart from crying. I had tears streamimg down my face when my phone rang, it was my brother, he was safe and well and he had sent his wife and kids to her family in Oamaru. I've never felt so relieved.
I spent the next three days, until I could get another flight, in Hamilton glued to the TV and feeling more useless than I have in my entire life. There were people without homes staying in tents just down the road from where we live, an empty 3 bedroom house going to waste. I finally got home midnight friday, I'll share more tomorrow.

You can read more about the February Quake here or watch this youtube video. At approx 4.00 you can see what used to be the Iconic Bar (Our Favourite Bar) the woman screaming for her brother was inside the Iconic with her brother. They had to drag her out as she didn't want to leave him. He didn't survive. This video only covers one block of the inner city

It feels kinda inappropriate to add a refashion to this post, but as that is what Made by Me May is about I'll just add these pics
Made by Me May - Day 20

I got some exciting mail today. When I first started this blog I also made my first comment on one of my favourite blogs. That comment won me an amazing pendant from Agy at Green Issues.

I chose the one on the left. And it arrived today, I love it, thank you so much Agy. If you want to check out her tutorial you can find it here.
Inside the parcel also came a lovely note

I have mentioned before the Earthquakes that have destroyed parts of the city I love. But I haven't gone into how they have affected me. Today we had a strong reminder that the earth still has the upperhand, a 5.3 10km deep quake. Here in Christchurch we are up on the lingo but basically it was a really good shake, enough to get you running for the doorframe in ordinary circumstances but here, we just pause in mid conversation for a few seconds and when it doesn't develop into anything carry on as if it never happened. It hardly even warrants a mention on facebook.

Before Sept 2010, the last quake I remember feeling was in 1992, in the middle of a high school art history class. Comparatively small now, it was terrifying at the time. So, 4.35am Sept 4th was a huge shock, I was at a friends and after a long night we were about to head to bed. I sat shocked on her couch while she ran for the doorway screaming. I can remember clearly the sight of her being flung across the room. We spent the next few hours under her dining table, ringing and texting everyone we knew. The power was out and we had no water and no way of knowing what was happening in the rest of Christchurch except rumours. Rumours of people fighting over water, bridges collapsing, buildings falling down. Never before would I have believed them to be true, now I know better.

Her family soon came over as they had a new baby and no way of heating their house and she had a fire. I got a ride back to my place, at the time we were staying with my Mum, and was shocked to see our chimney, guttering and fence in the neighbours driveway. The Mr had not mentioned this on the phone. Luckily our power had been restored, and I spent the next two days on the computer and watching TV shocked at what I was seeing. I couldn't sleep for days and even then I had to have the light on for weeks. We were so lucky, noone was killed and few hurt. There was a lot of talk about what it would have been like if it happened in the middle of the day, and we felt relieved, everyone had a story and we heard them all, it was the main topic of conversation for months. I think we were in shock and we all turned to each other, I know I have never valued my friends and family as much as I do since that day. 7.1 on the richter scale they told us and it was just the beginning. Part 2 Tomorrow.
Made by Me May - Day 19

I have always wanted to go on a cruise. I've never thought too much about doing the big OE, travel just isn't that important to me, but a cruise. Ever since I was young and watched The Love Boat religiously I have wanted to wave goodbye from the ledo deck and sit at the Captains table for dinner. It's the romance that gets me I think. You can imagine how jealous I am of my MIL at the moment, she is on the high seas visiting beautiful places and drinking colourful cocktails. I received an email from her today and although she hasn't said too much or sent any photos I'm sure she is having a wonderful time. I think she would be a lovely romantic interest for Captain Stubbing......
Made by Me May - Day 18

We turned the heatpump on for the first time today, Man it's getting cold! For me to say that you know it's true. The Mr and I are so different when it comes to temperature tolerance, he can be sitting with 2 jerseys and a jacket on complaining about the cold and I'm sitting next to him in a t-shirt feeling comfortable. So, when to turn on the heatpump is always an issue. We were lucky enough to have a heatpump installed by EQC (Earthquake Commission) for free just before last winter and I have to say I don't know how we would have managed without.
It's been long enough that I can show you more pictures of our fur babies right, don't want you to get sick of the sight of them. I took a photo of each of them today and have to say they encompass who they are quite nicely.

Here's Jack. Sleeping in Mr's suitcase, which I refuse to unpack and has been sitting in our lounge until it's empty. Jack loves to climb into things to sleep, we have found him in some weird places.

And lastly Kitty, who as soon as she saw the camera wanted to know what it was and wouldn't sit still. I usually have to sneak up on her for a decent photo.

About a year ago I found an old mirror frame for free, I had a vision and grabbed it. I filled the space where the mirror used to be with some old wallpaper I had grabbed from my Granparents house, it had been left over from decorating their bedroom and stored in the top of their wardrobe for I don't know how long (that wallpaper was up when I was born). The frame still had the metal tabs on the sides that held the mirror and I used them to criss cross some string over the front. I used pegs to hang some black and white photos plus other bits and pieces to decorate.
Made by Me May - Day 17

I'm over half way now. When I started I wasn't sure I would have enough to share, but I'm amazing myself with how easy I'm finding each new day. I had heard about blogging of course, but it took one lady to get me hooked. That's Marisa of newdressaday.com, if you haven't seen her stuff you have to go check her out. Go on do it now, I can wait..............Ok, isn't she so inspiring. I suddenly had a name for what I had been doing for years and a whole community of like minded people. Before I knew it I was obsessed with blogs. That first day was over a year ago now and I can't believe how far I have come since then.
Today I have for you a copycat of a Marisa copycat.
I used a thinner wire and blue cotton. Next time I'll use a thicker wire, but I'm pretty happy with it.
Made by Me May- Day 16

Thought some of you might be curious to see how the bedroom makeover is coming. We moved into this place in Dec 2010, we were looking for a temporary place and weren't too concerned about the looks of the place, as long as it had plenty of room. It's definitely an interesting place, the outside desperately needs a paint and the garden was a bit overgrown before we weeded. The Feb 22 earthquake changed our plans a little and as places to rent are hard to find in Christchurch we plan to stay put. Now the inside was a bit of a shock the first time we walked through, hadn't been cleaned in who knows how long, paint was peeling off the walls and there was even some lovely graffiti in the bedrooms. But I saw it's potential and we forged ahead dispite others concern. We have done a bit of painting throughout but the room that is our bedroom was left until now, I couldn't stand the colour anymore

This is a pic of the ceiling, that's right the ceiling!!! I have now painted over the walls but they were this dark blue colour also.

Now this shows you a bit better, the large blue diamond that hung above our heads every night. As you can imagine it was like a cave in there

Now, here is the window I finished painting today, a crisp clean white instead of the dirty cream it was before.

And a better look at the new colour, a gorgeous soft green. The diamond is still there for now, but not for much longer.

Now why paint a rental house you may be thinking, Well I have plenty of free time at the moment and I find it great practise in decorating and design besides so far this makeover has only cost me $26 and I'm figuring the total will be about $40. We get the bnefit of a beautiful cosy room without the rental price to go with it. And we can use the before and after photos when we decide to start looking for a new place, whenever that may be.

And a quick refashion

A new pair of socks made from the sleeves of an old unwanted Jersey, aren't the buttons just so cute.
Made by Me May - Day 15

Halfway! Yah!

Throughout the years I have had a few jobs. I was nanny for a year, I worked in retail sales, I studied to be a hairdresser, I even worked in telemarketing ( I never sold anything, I only worked there for 2 weeks until they went out of business, Not my fault I'm sure :) ) But I always came back to childcare, It is a joy for me to spend time with kids, they are so refreshingly unspoiled by the world at large. I have cared for all ages but my favourite is preschool. I have worked from home doing Home Based Care, looking after up to 4 children in your own home as a trained carer and educator, I hope to go back to it again in the near future. So with that in mind I started decorating our spare room as a potential playroom/nursery.

The wardrobe doors were painted a faded and marked cream and one frame of the door had been replaced and not painted.

I painted the whole thing white and wanted to add some interest so
dove into the pile of children's book I have and came up with some
pictures I liked, but to have it make more sense I added phrases from
the book and now each panel has it's own story.

Here's a close up of the doors, The left one has Goldilocks and the right Jack and the beanstalk. I'm really happy with how they turned out, and still have heaps of stories left for future projects.
